2016 October 24 55.7km / 4700m / 16h 50m Almost amazed I managed to nail this round this late in the year! Another little long-term idea is complete - the 12 Mullardoch Munros in one go. (I've done it twice before in two days). I worked out split times between the summits, all slightly faster than Naismith's, divided my time and went for it when the forecast looked good.

Walking at 3am, Carn nan Gobhar and Sgurr na Lapaich were climbed at night. Dawn broke over An Riabhachan and An Socach, and I was walking off my fourth Munro of the day with dawn breaking over the hills.

The southern lot were physically quite hard, and I picked each of in turn - a great exercise in patience! Stunning views all day and a chill in the air which meant that stopping for any length of time wasn't practical. Mam Sodhail and Carn Eighe had a smattering of rime ice, then I headed east over the last Munros, really tired to finish in dimming light on Toll Creagach.

Still ended up bashing through heather and bog back to the dam by headtorch, slept in the car near Inverness, and home the following morning. Quite an adventure!

A trip with Joe, doing a recce for his Ramsay Round. Been looking forward to this for a long time, with equal measures of inspiration, curiosity, interest and nervousness! How would I do trying to go 55km in a day? Well, turned out quite well, all things considered. Absolutely belted over the Nevis Range, with the first four Munros crossed in under four hours. The Grey Corries were highly enjoyable, then the slope to the summit of Stob Coire Easain was a proper slog. Down the far side to find sunny isolation at the Treig dam (quick break here), then right back up the other side to Stob Coire Sgriodain - it got hard here, but more in that the legs just got slow on the uphills. A sunny evening, feeling tired over Chno Dearg, then a last hard climb to the top of Beinn na Lap feeling dizzy. I picked up on the bit back into Glen Nevis (no more uphills!) and absolutely blasted along to Staoineag. Had a lovely night here, a good sleep, and left Joe to the Mamores the following morning. I had a nice (and sore!!!!) walk the length of Glen Nevis before hitching the final couple miles back to the Youth Hostel (cheers Dougie and co...). Sat in the sun eating ice cream there, and not long after, Joe appeared having ran the ten Mamores. Unsurprisingly he succeeded on the Ramsay Round a couple weeks later!

2016 May 11 24km / 3200m Again. Epic. Second time. The list on this website looks somewhat ridiculous when there are so many pointy bits to include. Anyway...! Did all 11 Munros, led the 4 classic climbs, did Gars-bheinn, Caisteal a' Garbh-choire, Bidean Druim nan Ramh, and finished down Pinnacle Ridge and Knight's Peak. All in one long, glorious sunny day. Did it with Adrian - same as last year. We both realised there was no stress involved, we knew we could do it, and just had to make it happen. And so we did. The only small question mark was Naismith's Route on the Tooth, having turned back last year because of a lack of gear. This time it was absolutely fine. An absolutely immense day.

Still felt pretty good on this 4th Munro, so after three times bailing here in the past, I finally continued westward to Beinn a' Chroin and co. 2015 December 6 32.6km / 2000m A really nice round of the 9 Munros on either side of Glen Shee. I'd been drumming with Maiden Scotland in Dundee the night before, parked up at Glen Shee somewhere around 3am, got a few hours sleep in the front seat of the car then went for it. Wintry hills, but snow conditions hardly tiring so I could walk distances more as though it were in summer condition. Weather was relatively good! Due to the previous nights efforts, plus a cold, I was very tired all the way, but as is often the case I never actually ran out of energy. You only stop because you decide to stop. Quitting is a choice, after all... I made the summit of the Cairnwell in almost-pitch black under a canopy of stars, then descended back to the car by head torch, happy and knackered.

Six out of 10 wasn't a bad haul in the end, but I did not feel well and it was still a mission! A nice day however - weather was ideal for being on the high hills. Ben Nevis was simply impressive, and nice to see all day. In this region, it's just always there. You never break free from it's presence. After six Munros, I descended into Glen Nevis, across the wire bridge and a nice walk back to the car at Achriabhach. Stayed the night at Keith's in Glen Coe (by which time I felt much better) and home the next morning.

Knocked a chunk out of my nine remaining Munros - just isolated ones left now to finish the second round! Enjoyed the slabby bit up the side of Cnap Coire Loch Tuath particularly. It's amazing these hills are schist, they seem to weather in ways very untypical of this rock type. Lots of isolation to reach Eididh, then a busy day over the central peaks - everyone was out enjoying the sun. Descent direct to the south then over the moors to each the car. Bloody-mindedness always wins out. Luinne Bheinn was a formality, and Ladhar Bheinn turned out to be utterly. Massive. Another nice weather day, but I was well cooked by the time I reached Barrisdale. No, I wouldn't make Kinlochhourn tonight, the bothy would happily do. 2015 July 3 24.6km / 3100m FINALLY. Cuillin Traverse done! Adrian got in touch through UKC which gave the final piece needed for me to go for it. Was a touch slow as I'd just managed to shake off the cold, and as quickly as I ever have done as well - I couldn't miss this opportunity. Drove to Skye, got a few hours kip and away the back of 6am. The following 16 and a half hours were just pleasure - all the way to the InPinn was done in mist, then the skies cleared. Adrian's stashed water at An Dorus was much appreciated, then the sun came out and the way ahead was clear.

I never had a sense of great stress throughout the day, everything was there for the taking. Assuming I didn't crash out, I knew it would relent through consistent, gentle pressure. The only *but* was having retreated off Naismith's Route through a lack of gear - otherwise it would have been a full house - a perfect traverse. Went up Lota Corrie Route to the Tooth, then over to Gillean where we topped out after a shade under 11 hours from Gars-bheinn.

Then just a descent of Pinnacle Ridge in the sunset and a long walk back to the Slig for drinks (and a bottle of milk!). What a day. This one won't be forgotten.

Stob a' Choin in particular has been a long time in coming as it is one of the more conspicuous peaks in the Southern Highlands. Forest bash at the start, moorland bashing in the middle - this place actually has a very lost-world feel! Tough ones to get done - these Corbetts can be no pushovers...

2015 April 23 25.8km / 2630m Wonderful day alone over the hills above Lochs Lochy and Arkaig. Major works going on at Gleann Chia-aig, it is a building site and it made accessing the hills somewhat frustrating. Once up it was brilliant - early morning inversions clearing to a crisp sunny day, t-shirt and shorts weather, and warm light. Evidence of a mega full depth avalanche on 2nd Munro Sron a' Choire Ghairbh (went 400 vertical metres!). And on the subject of Munros, that's me 250 Munros up on the second round. The end is in sight? Get them done this summer! Anyway, nice sunny pound down Glas Bheinn led back to the car and drive home - up and down in a day - it was a long one! But very, very good. It's a pleasure to go an explore these less frequented areas as on the Corbetts and Grahams.

Busy on the Munros, much quieter on the Corbetts. Beinn Damh is quite a mountain! Sunny, golden descent straight to the pub front door.

2013 July 20 30.2km / 2230m Mullardoch day 2 - I was up early, with the sun and made Sgurr nan Ceathreamhnan with mist in the valleys and sunrise casting light upon the endless vista of bare, gaunt mountains. I enjoyed the morning and it's coolness, and I made it to the third last Munro before the heat arrived. The last two Munros were too hot, and me too sore, to be enjoyed. But the morning had been brilliant, as out-there are you'll get in Scotland. I got back to the car more relieved than happy, scooted back to Cannich and downed a load of water. From here on, my parents would be up on holiday until Ben Hope, thus Mullardoch marked the end of one section of my summer.

But on the rationale that I might as well try and do as much as possible, I made it to Bealach an Lapain, 4 Munros down, buzzing at my progress and absolutely determined not to go down! I completed the Sisters, made a rapid descent of Sgurr Fhuarain, waded the river up to my waist and managed to hitch a lift back to the Cluanie. Epic. In size, this trip just takes the p***. :-)

Went with Struan with the intention of doing the 12 Affric Munros - yet another big mental trip this summer. Weather was good, the hills were long and hard. Got eaten by midges at the Mullardoch dam, slept in the back of the car. Every hill was really hard work, physically and mentally, and a change from the usual to be honest. The remoteness was amazing. Dragged myself over Ceathreamhnan in the evening and slept out in the open on top of An Socach. A good night - apart from the rain!

Mam Sodhail was a tough morning climb. I felt a bit sick. Each summit broke down another mental block, and we were not out of water until the end of the day. Was glad to finish up on Toll Creagach and get down to Fraoch-choire where a (finally!) a drink of water made the situation bearable. Went through the pines, onto the loch shore and down the last bit of tarmac to reach the car.

These are hard, big hills. No shortcuts here. I was completely knackered from start to end - I started wondering if I ever actually recovered from the Cairngorms?! I'd wanted to do this trip for a long time having been turned back in May by snow and bad weather. Glad to finally do it; a great trip.

We'd expected rain and clag but it was windy and cool with big blue skies and piling cumulus. We'd dropped bags 7km from Ben Avon on the opposite side of Bhuird. At the summit tor, we looked back to Bhuird to see dark storm clouds brewing over the summit - I felt the deep fear of commitment. All was fine and good weather returned for Chaorainn and Bynack More. The latter was climbed with gear at Fords of Avon refuge, which is where we slept for the night.

Sgor Gaoith and Gleann Einich are mind blowing. The Moine Mhor is very amenable for it's altitude (wouldn't want to do it in fog though). Monadh Mor and Beinn Bhrotain were big hills and we started to get really tired at this point. Dropping rucksacks en route helped a lot, but I hit the wall on Cairn Toul while hauling mine up and over. Devil's Point was last, and we climbed it feeling very drained. 2012 July 15 24.5km / 1040m / 6h 50m Last day with Dougie and Struan. They did the first top with me. Harsh weather on A' Chailleach gave way to good conditions on the plateau. A lot like Campsie walking - at nearly 25km it is a long round, especially the walk out at the end from Carn Dearg! I'd thought about climbing Geal Charn (Monadhliath) afterward but thought better of it and went to stay in Fort William instead...

2012 July 14 29km / 1850m / 11h 05m Epic day with Doug and Struan - five Munros of Creag Meagaidh area. Originally planned to climb three, but it was going so well and the weather was so good that we just kept going. Initially, muscles were sore from Alder, but that wore off and it turned into a pretty long day. Coire Ardair is so spectacular, I hope to be back soon and explore it more. Beinn a' Chaorainn was a nice hill - triple topped - and I think we did Beinn Teallach just because it was a Munro! Struan descended after the fourth to get the car and Doug and I did the Teallach. Very tiring descent - and went back to stay in Boat of Garten.

Enormous and remote. Over 100 stag thundered away from me on Geal-charn and I got over Carn Dearg back to Culra. Tired but the weather was great. A nice cycle out, though I got tired toward the end. 2011 June 28 23.3km / 1500m / 12h 10m Day 4: The last day and a surprisingly tough one. Cloud on Aonach Beag gave way to increasing sunny skies. Aonach Mor was a nice (rucksack-less) walk and the descent from the Aonachs was much easier than expected. Walked up CMD feeling elated, then Nevis burst into view. Wow - what a place. A walk around the arete brought us to Ben Nevis summit and a walk completed. It wasn't over yet - the dash to the train station is yet another story!

2011 June 26 20km / 1700m / 13h 10m Day 2: A big day. Statistically not the biggest I've done but with the problem of heavy packs on the route. The Devil's Ridge was a lot of fun, the weather on the Ring of Steall was okay. Na Gruagaichean was a very hard climb in wind and rain, leaving us completely tired on the way to Binnein Mor. We needed a lot of patience to see the Munros through. To complete the wider glen traverse, we needed to get to Meanach bothy for nightfall (miles away). We left out Binnein Beag, the logical outlier. Hellish climb over Sgurr Eilde Mor then descent to Glen Nevis in the gloom. It looked like Mordor - such an empty place. The river was almost too deep to cross (Mick and Mackenzie's epic came to mind!) but we got across in thigh-deep waters and settled in for a nice night with chicken curry but no fire!

2010 April 11 31km / 2700m / 12h Great solo trip over the five Bridge of Orchy Munros in sunny weather, sunburn included. I took the train up Friday evening, stayed in the Orchy Hotel bunkhouse then headed off at 5.30am. With 31kms being the longest single solo trip I've done, I'm not sure where the energy and persistence came from, but it was a great day and these are were the most ideal conditions I could have asked for. To climb the five Bridge of Orchy Munros in a day is a small dream of mine fulfilled.

2010 February 27 16.2km / 750m / 7h 10m A wintry day on the Pentlands. This was my first time here and we had our fair share of snow, wind and cloud. Very little precipitation however. These relatively small hills felt far bigger in the latter reaches of the walk, in part due to tiredness but since the glen had a strikingly Highland feel. Felt very remote for hills so close to the city and they were very reminiscent of the Cairngorms.

But a ridge walk to do again - the mountains are beautiful in this area. The waterfall in Am Fraoch-choire is incredible! Well worth descending alongside even if the guidebooks don't say it. 2008 September 7 19km / 2200m / 8h A stonker of a trip - tired like I never have been before in the mountains! Did the "brutal" ascent of Ben More first plus the added bonus of climbing Beinn Tulaichean, one of the first mountains I climbed. Ben More and Stob Binnein are ranked (height) #16 and #18 in the UK. A pretty special day for me, taking eight hours. Shattered!
